Hope Restorers

As we prepare for the third annual Restored Gala (details here), we would like to highlight a group of people who are making this event possible: our Hope Restorers. This team will be returning a "hopeless" object into something beautiful and new. Additionally, they have each pledged to either raise $1,000 for Nadege or recruit 3 monthly donors. This will all be matched by a generous donor. We truly believe the Restorers + the Match + the Restored Gala will help us tangibly restore hope to survivors of sexual violence in Haiti.

Your monthly five-point summary of what's new with Nadege. 

1. What's Coming:

Although it's months away, we've already started gearing up for our 3rd annual Restored Gala. Mark your calendars for September 22nd at the Hobson. This year's Gala will help fund the operational costs of the safe house once it officially opens in 2019. If you or someone you know loves to make old things new again, we are still looking for three restorers to join the team. Those interested can fill out a form here.

2. Prayer Request:

We currently have two separate teams developing curriculum: one is focused on mental health and the other spiritual development. Will you join us in asking God to lead both teams as they seek to join Him in restoring hope to women in Haiti?

As Nadege continues to grow, our workload continues to increase which is why we are so thankful to welcome two new college interns to the team this summer. They begin next week, and we are overflowing with excitement!

#fivethingsfriday: Hope Multiplied

Your weekly five-point summary of what's new with Nadege. 

1. What's Coming:

We are in the process of hiring our first full-time employee in Haiti. The opening is for a Clinical Director who will oversee the mental health department of our aftercare facility. In order to fund the staff team in Haiti as well as the women and children who will soon occupy the house, we are looking for Hope Multipliers to become monthly sponsors at $40 a month (which equates to about two drinks at Starbucks or one meal at McDonald's per week)- not a lot when you consider the restorative impact of those dollars!

2. Prayer Request:

Will you join us in asking God for wisdom, discernment and the right connections as we hire a Clinical Director? This position will be vital in ensuring quality care to the future women and children of Nadege.

4. Thankful Thoughts

There is so much to be thankful for in this season of building. Just over two and half years ago, Nadege was only an idea. Today, steel beams are joining to form a location where hope will be restored for years to come. This was all made possible by a God who does the impossible and generous donors and volunteers who have stepped up to be a part of the solution.

#fivethingsfriday: Blocks of Hope

Your weekly five-point summary of what's new with Nadege. 

1. What's Coming:

Our team recently returned from an amazing trip to Haiti full of pursuing partnerships, connecting to other NGOs and witnessing the beginning phases of construction (see picture below) happen on our land. Another team will leave for Haiti next week to continue overseeing construction. This is a busy season for Nadege, and we're loving every minute.

2. Prayer Request:

Our curriculum team is ramping up to develop a culturally-sensitive mental health program. Will you pray for wisdom and progress as well as continued connections to counselors and social workers in Haiti?

#fivethingsfriday: Home Sweet Home

Your weekly five-point summary of what's new with Nadege. 

1. What's Coming:

We are excited to announce that as of yesterday BOTH containers (full of building materials) reached our land. Although this process has been longer than expected, the timing is actually perfect because we have a team traveling to Haiti next week to meet with our Haitian engineer to oversee the start-up of construction. We will then leave the exterior build-out in the hands of a very talented Haitian team!

2. Prayer Request:

We are embarking on a new season of building, strategizing and planning and could use a few extra prayers for wisdom, discernment, provision and divine appointments.

4. Thankful Thoughts

We are incredibly thankful for all of the hard work of our Board Chairman in Haiti, Guy (pictured above), for the tireless work he has put into getting those shipping contaners out of port. Within the last month, he has made multiple 6-hour (round trip) drives to our land, saved us $4,000 in custom fees and managed the logistics of getting the containers to our land. Employee of the month, for sure!

Your weekly five-point summary of what's new with Nadege. 

1. What's Coming:

After some delays in Miami, the building will be shipped this weekend and arrive in Port au Prince, Haiti on January 23rd. This means the materials that make up the safe house will likely reach our land a few days later. A few Nadege board members will take a trip to Haiti shortly thereafter to get the ball rolling on construction. We've never been more excited about a container full of steel! 

2. Prayer Request:

Please continue to pray for the construction process to go smoothly + safe travels and divine appointments for our construction teams.

1. What's Coming:

A few months ago, we announced that we had purchased the building package for the safe house. We are happy to report it should arrive in Haiti by early January! This means construction can begin shortly thereafter, bringing us one step closer to seeing hope restored for women in Haiti.

2. Prayer Request:

Please join us in praying the construction process goes smoothly. Groups will be traveling to and from Haiti throughout 2018 to oversee and assist in the building process. Will you also pray for safe travels and for God to break their hearts for what breaks His?

1. What's Coming:

Our third annual Breakfast with Santa is quickly approaching. This year we're pulling out all of the stops with Santa and his reindeer (obviously), face painting, cookie decorating, ornament making, a balloon twister and so much more. We are super excited to bring a little Haiti to Kokomo with a Haitian dance team, fanal creating (creole for lighthouse) and a visit from our Haitian board chair, Guy Robert Dossous. See the video below to meet Guy and join us on December 9th from 9-11am at Oakbrook Church. 

2. Prayer Request:

Will you join us in praying for Breakfast with Santa? We're asking God to bring so much joy to our local community while providing #HoHoHOPE to survivors of sexual violence. Every dollar raised will go toward operating the safe house in Haiti.

Say hello to Lindsay Bollhoefer! She is the mother of three little boys. Her husband is in the army, and she teaches music at Northwestern Elementary. In her spare time, she enjoys adventuring with her boys, and singing and playing piano in the worship team at Oakbrook. 1. In three words describe yourself.

So hard! I asked my husband to answer this and he sent me a list of ten words, so i chose from that. He said that I'm adventurous, intelligent and abnormal.

2. What does hope mean to you?

The time that I've spent working on my Restored piece has become a time of meditation on hope and all that Nadege is going to do. I think about how I can spread the word about Nadege and its message of hope. For me, hope is faith in a brighter future. It's a reason to wake each morning and greet the day with optimism. 

3. What has caused you to help restore hope in Haiti?

I am so blessed to be able to follow my dreams in this life. I can have a career that I love, provide for my family, and pursue the things I am passionate about, all because I live in a place where I am valued. I want every woman to feel valued and have a chance at living the life that she deserves. That is what drives me to help Nadege's mission. 

4. Our theme for the Gala is Isaiah 61:3. How have you witnessed "beauty coming from ashes" in your own life or the lives of others?

It was difficult for us to conceive our first son, and I was emotionally in a low place. For a year we watched others have children or become pregnant, and it was very hard to be excited for them or enjoy babies. Finally, after much prayer, we met our son, Holden. If there is anything more beautiful than the birth of a child, I don't know what it would be. The gift of a new life is truly a miracle, and a gift from God.

5. What is your hidden talent?

Well I don't know that I have any "hidden" talents. Music is my talent; I sing and play the clarinet and piano.

#SpotlightSunday: Nancy & Kendra

Say hello to Nancy Bayer and Kendra Bayer-Foreman- a mother-daughter artist team!  Nancy is a retired public school art teacher.  Kendra gives art lessons and holds art workshops for students in both Tipton and Kokomo.  She is also the creative force behind Handbags for Healing. The creative duo is currently working on giving new life to a set of 4 discarded chairs.  Read more below about Nancy and Kendra's powerful words on hope and their belief that "helping women find their beauty again, giving hope to the hopeless, and a future walking with the Lord" is the heart of Nadege.

2. What does hope mean to you?

Believing something better is possible and coming! We are both very optimistic people.

3. What has caused you to help restore hope in Haiti?

Nancy: Our family has been involved with different mission organizations in Haiti for many years. we knew about the poverty, the voodoo practices, the lack of educational opportunities and the need for a life-changing meeting with Jesus. We recently have worked with Curtis Stout on a Bible-based art curriculum for Project 117. When we heard from Emily about the hopeless condition of many women in Haiti we wanted to use our art talents to help be restorers of hope to these women.

Kendra: I desire to be apart of making life better for these women.

4. Our theme for the Gala is Isaiah 61:3. How have you witnessed “beauty coming from ashes” in your own life or the lives of others?

Nancy: I personally have known many women whose life journeys have led them through really hard situations- abuse, disease, marital issues, mental illness, death, addiction, etc. I've seen over and over again how knowing Christ and experiencing the power of God's love has enabled them to go through the worst and come out on the other side bruised but not broken- beauty from ashes.

Kendra: The older I get the more evidence I see of God's bigger picture...answered prayers, ripple effects, assurance that all things work together for good to those who are called according to His purpose.

5. What is your hidden talent?

Nancy: I can still speak a little high school Spanish.

Kendra: I can sing two notes at the same time...it is not pretty.

Say hello to Julie Baldini. This is her second year restoring an item for the Restored Gala. She is a mom to three, passionate about serving the next generation and an advocate for HOPE everywhere she goes. We can't wait to see how she takes this small rocking chair and restores it into an item children will be using for years to come. 2. What does hope mean to you?

Hope is a feeling down deep in your soul that gives you the confidence to courageously face each day!

3. What has caused you to help restore hope in Haiti?

My heart aches for anyone living in hopeless situations. I have become educated about the number of victims of gender based violence in Haiti through the founders of Nadege, and I want to play my part in restoring hope to those victims.

4. Our theme for the Gala is Isaiah 61:3. How have you witnessed “beauty coming from ashes” in your own life or the lives of others?

During my last trip to Haiti, I met 3 girls at a children's home who were displaced from their home after their mother committed suicide. These girls have experienced the most unimaginable circumstances, but they are finding joy each new day in their new home. Because of their new circumstances, these girls have a safe home and food to eat every day. They will receive an education, and most importantly they will hear about a God who loves them and will never leave them.

5. What is your hidden talent?

I have what they call a green thumb when it comes to growing plants and flowers.

Meet Doug and Dea Mygrant. They are crafty, hospitable and promotors of hope. This year they are lending their talents to nadege by restoring this old piece of barn wood into a beautiful farm house table. The three words to describe Doug are creative, jokester and taskmaster. The 3 words to describe Dea are encouraging, outgoing, and animal lover (especially dogs).

2. What does hope mean to you?

Hope to us means bringing joy into the world by being kind to people and letting them know you care.  

3. What has caused you to help restore hope in Haiti?

It is a small way to help for those who so desperately need our help, and we love to restore old pieces or make pieces into something new and fun.

4. Our theme for the Gala is Isaiah 61:3. How have you witnessed “beauty coming from ashes” in your own life or the lives of others?

We witness beauty coming from the ashes every day in our lives because we mess up every day and we can ask for Gods grace in our lives and share it with others. What a beautiful truth that is!

5. What is your hidden talent?

Doug's hidden talent is that he has installed two in-ground pools in our homes all by himself and loves doing multiple projects around the house. Dea's hidden talent is that she loves painting furniture and making it look completely different without going out and buying new pieces.

I am a rebel.

2. What does hope mean to you? 

Hope is a belief in a better tomorrow.

3. What has caused you to help restore hope in Haiti? 

The thought of what the women there have gone through is unfathomable to me.  I can't imagine being able to listen to any of their stories and NOT wanting to help, in ANY way possible!  I think we all forget at times how good we have it here and we need to band together to make a difference.

4. Our theme for the Gala is Isaiah 61:3. How have you witnessed “beauty coming from ashes” in your own life or the lives of others? 

I have seen two of my nephews start to grow into fantastic young men, while faced with every adversity you could imagine.  

5. What is your hidden talent? 

I couldn't figure this one out, so I asked my husband what he thought.  He told me that my hidden talent is empathy.  He also stated it is my biggest fault at times :)

Say hello to Morgan Young- mentor, pastor, and restorer! Through his love for helping others, Morgan is restoring a piece for the Restored Gala this year. He currently is a pastor at Oakbrook, facilitator of the Kokomo Schools CEO program, and is a co-owner of Main Street Café with his wife, Sandra. 2. What does hope mean to you?

It's the power of possibility. The incentive to try again. The excuse to strive for something better. The fuel to fulfill our potential.

3. What has caused you to help restore hope in Haiti?

My friend, Julie Baldini, whom I've served with in Haiti twice, kindly suggested I get involved and since I already believed in what Nadege is doing, it made sense. God used Julie to nudge me ;-)

4. Our theme for the Gala is Isaiah 61:3. How have you witnessed “beauty coming from ashes” in your own life or the lives of others?

Absolutely. I never knew faith or church as a child; I came to know Jesus as an adult. So my life was ashes! I've seen God take people's addictions, horrible marriages, abuse, loss, bad choices and make beautiful things through His miraculous relationship of grace. Walking miracles are all around us!

5. What is your hidden talent?

I'm a teen-whisperer ;-) God has shown up in powerful ways just the last couple years as I've worked with high school seniors, mentoring them through the Kokomo CEO entrepreneurship class. Never saw myself doing this--what's a guy my age doing with high school seniors? ;-)

Hope means never giving up, always seeing the value in a new day with new opportunities 

3.  What has caused you to help restore hope in Haiti?

The women in Haiti need a voice. I saw the need and how I can help, so I couldn't say no. Every effort, big or small, plays a part in making a huge difference in someone's life and participating in the restored gala is one small way I can help make a big impact! 

4. We love the creative way you are fundraising for the Gala. Please tell us about Shop for a Cause. 

I love to shop!! I love spending time with fun people who make me feel happy. So when given the fundraising challenge for the gala, I wanted to make it fun and give some amazing ladies the opportunity to share their businesses with others while being able to play their small part in making a difference. I thought there was no better way than to have a shopping event! Some of the area's best boutiques will be there along with jewelry, make-up, custom-made accessories & decor and even healthy living products! There will be a silent auction as well! It's going to be such a fun night. It's August 3rd at Oakbrook Church from 5:30-7:30.

5.  What is your hidden talent?

Decorating on a budget, whether it be shopping for awesome deals or restoring old furniture or junk! I've been known to pick things up from the curb on trash day....please don't judge! Those things have turned out to be my best projects!!

 

Post-trip Ponderings

Bonjou zanmis (hello friends in Kreol)! My name is Tyler Martin, and I’m a huge fan of Nadege and the work they are building towards in Haiti. In fact, I feel so strongly about their mission of restoring hope to Haitian women, that I actually made way down to Haiti in early July with a couple of my friends to learn about Haitian culture, love the Haitian people, and jump into what God is doing there!

To say it was an unforgettable trip would be a pretty huge understatement. I could write a short novel about my team’s experience, but I’ll contain myself and share about my favorite part of Haiti, the people! Here are three of the most remarkable people we got to spend time with on our trip:

Rachel

Rachel (picture here with our team) is one of those people that you instantly know is going to change the world after about 30 seconds of interacting with her. She is an incredible Haitian woman who has served the Lord all over the world, and now is devoting her life to coming alongside Nadege in empowering women in Haiti. We got the opportunity to meet up with her on Nadege’s land in Jacmel, and while we were there she shared with passion about the ways God had directly led to her commit her to life to freeing women from oppression in the name of Jesus. My entire team literally had chills listening to her! Not only was her passionate vision for her country amazing, but she also helped our team a ton through connecting us with a local school and a local church in Jacmel that we got to go visit. Score! On top of all that, we all loved hearing her talk about her favorite Haitan recipes and her adorable 7 year old daughter Abigail. Basically, our team unanimously decided that Rachel was just the best!

Nadia

From the moment Nadia welcomed us onto the grounds the school she runs in Jacmel (pictured), I knew that our team was going to learn a lot from this woman. She is the kind of person that radiates with kindness, laughs greatly, and pours out insight each time she speaks. We all sat in a circle with her during a warm Haitian day and asked her all kinds of questions about her home country of Haiti, the Haitian education system, and the role of women in Haitian society. Like I said, we learned a lot! She was deeply encouraged to hear about the mission of Nadege, and particularly excited about the opportunity for the children of Nadege’s women to attend her school, which is within walking distance of Nadege’s land. Similar to Rachel, I was just blown away by the amount of passionate vision Nadia had for Haiti. God is surely raising up leaders in this country, how exciting is it think about Nadege partnering with visionaries like this?!

Junior

My man Junior! This guy was our guide throughout our trip in Haiti. We actually traveled via hiking between cities for most of the trip, so we definitely owe our lives to Junior for getting us around the mountains/forests of Haiti. Apart from his hiking skills though, Junior was unendingly selfless and equally hilarious in the 10 days we got to spend with him. By the end of the trip our group had its own language of inside jokes, and Junior flashed some impressive freestyle rapping skills. Junior also fielded countless questions from our team about Haiti, and did an incredible job at helping shape our understanding of Haitian culture. Within many of these conversations Junior would share his hopes for the future of Haiti, and his heart for his country undoubtedly shaped mine as well. Genuinely feel like I gained a big brother in Junior, and I’m very hopeful that I’ll see him again.

As you can see, God blessed us some incredible new friends during our time in Haiti. I loved every single part of my time in Haiti, from the delicious food to the hectic cities to the soaring mountains, but what I will cherish the most are these (and many more!) people. They welcomed me into their homeland, gave me plenty of lifelong memories, and shared their bold hopes for what God will do in Haiti. I’m beyond thankful for each of them, and so confident that by standing alongside people like these, Nadege truly will restore hope all over Haiti!

2. What does hope mean to you?

To me, hope means to believe in something greater; that the best is yet to come. 

3. What has caused you to help restore hope in Haiti?

My husband has been to Haiti twice to help with an organization that cares for the left behind children of Haiti. When we met, his passion for the children and the place he had once been caused me to long to go there some day. This past October, I went to Haiti to help those same children my husband once helped. While I was there, I fell in love with much more than just the children. I fell in love with the people, the culture, and the endless possibilities. I came home from Haiti with a burning desire to help the organization I fell in love with that provides children with a proper education, but also to help this new organization, Nadege, in any way that I could, so that Nadege could help as many Haitian women as possible. 

4. Our theme for the Gala is Isaiah 61:3. How have you witnessed “beauty coming from ashes” in your own life or the lives of others?

Last year we had two sunflowers that I harvested too late so the seeds were rotten. I took down the flowers and threw them on my garden to decompose, and this year we have five beautiful and unplanned sunflowers in their place 

5. What is your hidden talent?

I grow excellent kale.

#SpotlightSunday- Brittany Lake

Meet our second restorer to be featured in our #spotlightsunday- Brittany Lake. She is currently studying Art Therapy at the University of Indianapolis. Keep reading to see why she is passionate about art and restoring hope.

In three words describe yourself.

Outgoing, Energetic, Caring

What does hope mean to you?

To me, hope means giving someone a second chance and that is what I believe Nadege will do for the women in Haiti.

What inspired you to help restore hope in Haiti?

I decided that I wanted to help restore hope when I met my friend Adrianne for dinner once we had just got home from college. She began to tell me about Nadege and I immediately knew I wanted to help in anyway possible. I am ecstatic to have the opportunity to put my artistic abilities to work for a great cause!

During spring break this year, I had the opportunity to go to Mazaltán, Mexíco with Delight Ministries of the University of Indianapolis. During this time, I witnessed God's power working through the lives of the children we were working with. Being able to see how much love was in the hearts of those children was truly amazing.

What is your hidden talent?

I found my hidden talent in 8th grade, and that is was painting.

Restorers of Hope

As we prepare for the second annual Restored Gala (details here), we would like to highlight a group of people who are making this event possible: our Hope Restorers. This team is restoring twenty-five items, turning a "hopeless" object into something beautiful and new. Additionally, they have each pledged to raise $1,000 for Nadege, which will be matched by a generous donor up to $25,000. We truly believe the Restorers + the Match + the Restored Gala will = a safe house for women in Haiti!
